Every year, Great Eastern strives for originality and “something different” in its anchor corporate-culture building program.
The Solution
Synchronising with the “amazing race” theme of Great Eastern’s program for this year, Zimerick developed an exclusive application fulfilling the program’s objective.
The objective was building bonds amongst colleagues while they go through thick and thin together and promote camaraderie through the excitement of a time-based competition. Introducing a virtual race Great Eastern Amazing Race (GEAR), on top of the physical race, provided a unique proposition for the program.
GEAR is an interactive virtual game where up to 4 teams, each with an iPod touch, race against each other around a virtual map of Singapore. The game can be played with 1 to 40 players as single players or teams in a relay sequence. Prior to the race, participants can personalise their avatars by taking a photo. Once all players are linked up, the race begins! At various cross-roads, participants are required to pick the path with the correct corporate value. A wrong answer will cause the avatar to explode and lead to a 10sec time penalty with participants taking on a different race route. The first one to complete the race will be the winner.
Though a seemingly simple game, GEAR is a race packed with lots of fun and content for participants. There are myriad little details that add layers to the game, such as incorporating various distinctive aspects of Great Eastern like the company’s mission and vision statements and properties in Singapore. The race is also made more realistic with side elements like fish appearing in the sea, flying birds and even a traffic camera that reflects racing speed.
GEAR is different from other Apple device apps in that it allows for real-time multi-player interactivity hosted on another iPod. This also lowers the cost of the game to the organisation while introducing a multi-media hand-held game as a special feature of the team-building programme.
The Results
GEAR was “something different” and the unique proposition to Great Eastern’s corporate-culture building program this year. As part of the program’s agenda, GEAR aptly encapsulated the company’s vision, mission and core values into an Apple application that was both engaging and educational. Positioned as the icebreaker activity for the program, GEAR was highly effective in creating excitement and high engagement levels amongst the employees.
One could tell the camaraderie spirit in play as the teams took group photos and ‘geared’ themselves to start the race. From the word “GO”, loud banter, cheers and laughter filled the room as the teams raced frantically to the end. Learning points from GEAR were quickly absorbed in a fun and non-obtrusive way. Employees’ evaluation of program has increased in satisfaction by 3.5%.

The NEWater Visitor Centre has adopted the use of iPods in its programme, NEWater Scientist, to educate 48,000 primary four students nation-wide in a span of 2 years.
Designed to captivate the minds of upper primary students, the NEWater Scientist promises an experiential learning journey leveraging on new technology such as hand-held touch pad devices.
Till date, the programme has garnered many positive responses from the students who are verbal on NEWater Scientist Facebook.
In the programme, students role play by dressing up as scientists, with a white lab coat and a yellow hard hat in a 2 hour challenge.
The challenge requires students to answer questions presented on the iPod via self-exploration of NEWater Visitor Centre and participating in various games at each station in the NEWater Visitor Centre gallery.
NEWater Filtration Gallery
The student will place the iPod touch on the Gallery Viewing Window and the app will then show how the filtration works within the pipes. Tapping on a button will ‘inject’ a bubble with the Student’s avatar which will then float through the pipes, behaving as a clean water molecule.
Finding the Sources of Water
Students are to locate sources of water which are littered around the user’s location. The app uses the in-built camera to show the surroundings where various icons are floating in virtual space. The student is then required to move/spin around so as to locate the correct icon and tap on it once it is in view.
Kayak Race
Our clean reservoirs, which are a source of water, can be used for activities like kayaking. This app attempts to make users aware that there should not be littering on our reservoirs.
The NEWater Visitor Centre has adopted the use of iPods in its programme, NEWater Scientist, targeting to educate 48,000 primary four students nation-wide in a span of 2 years.
More than a hundred students from six schools has participated in the first run of the NEWater Scientist last saturday. A twelve year-old boy 蔡志聪 who was interviewed, said “We are delighted to be given the opportunity to play with new technology devices like the iPod touch which made the entire learning experience more interesting.”
Fish & Co.’s iPad menu is the first of its kind in Singapore that links to the outlet’s POS system to allow immediate ordering from your finger to the kitchen.

These interactive menus are available at The Glass House outlet, opposite Dhoby Ghaut.
The app showcases the complete listing of dishes in an underwater theme. It allows the customers to search for a dish via the ingredients and even allows customisation to the order.
Instead of flipping through a physical menu, users scrolls through the various dishes neatly sorted in their category and upon reaching the end of the scroll, simply dragging the menu further will jump to the next category.
Tapping on the dishes in the menu will pop-up further details of that dish with well taken images and the ability to tweet via Twitter or post the dish to Facebook. The app also offers customers to complete their meal or upsize their dish.
Selected dishes are then added to the bucket where the customers can preview their order before sending it to the kitchen. If no drinks or desserts are ordered, it will even prompt the customers if they would like to add them!

While waiting for the food to arrive, the app entertains with snippets of information and jokes scattered amidst the dishes, some of the icons will even take you via the internet to web pages of relevant information.
The highlight of this menu is that it even has a built-in game once you popped out of the water, and takes you to the waters near an island where your objective is to throw sea creatures to the chef.
If you manage to take the highest score in the game, you can even place your Facebook photo on the menu itself!
